It’s not often that we get a situation where one retailer’s Hit is another one’s Miss. But that’s what we’ve got this week with the debut of the Devil Wears Prada 2 limited edition shop of fashion apparel and accessories inspired by the new movie sequel, opening May 1. And here’s the big news: it’s at Walmart, not Target. This is just the kind of buzzy collection Target has been famous for…and just the kind of thing Walmart has never been able to pull off. It says a lot about the current state of the business in the discount space where Walmart is increasingly taking the high road in merchandising and Target seems to be lost somewhere out there on the blue highways. Talk about a reversal of branding fortune. As Miranda Priestly would dismissively say to Target, “That’s all.”
