We get that companies want to protect their valuable brand names, but Buc-ee’s, really? Over the past few months, they’ve sued at least half a dozen retailers—maybe more—for names and/or logos that they say are too similar to their iconic beaver character. One is a mini-mart called Beaver’s Mini Mart (it’s in Beavercreek, OH for god’s sake), while another is a small Georgia-based convenience store chain called Teddy’s whose cartoon mascot is a koala bear. We were never good at animal husbandry but we’re pretty sure koalas and beavers are two very different species. All that good will that Buc-ee’s has been building up as it expands from its Texas base is in jeopardy of going up in legal smoke with this kind of judicial nonsense. There’s just no reason for them to take a bite out of these competitors, don’t you think?
