Honestly, after four misses and counting, we’re really not trying to pick on them. But the decision by the new management to close the Neiman Marcus flagship store in downtown Dallas is just plain dumb. We have no doubt the store doesn’t make much money but is that really the only way to measure the assets for a revered brand? This is one of the most iconic flagships in all of retailing and a symbol of legendary Stanley Marcus and what Neiman’s represents, especially to Dallas shoppers. Surely there must have been a way to keep Neiman’s presence in that location by transforming much of the space to other functions, including art galleries, restaurants, and even subleases for startup brands. Downtown Dallas is having its struggles right now and we’re not suggesting Saks Global be philanthropic by keeping this store open and functioning. But creative leaders can find creative solutions when they look at the bigger picture of what a brand truly means. It’s important for the Neiman Marcus brand legacy.
