Hey, didn’t we all think the retail business has been pretty flat, so single digit gains in sales were considered above average? So, WTF, Ross sure turned that theory into mush. Its sales for the first quarter were up 21 percent and, yes, some of that came from new stores, but comp sales were up 17 percent for the period. Ross has been a bit of a slacker in the off-price space, as the TJX brands always were outperforming everyone. But not this quarter. Ross said its performance was across the board, mostly driven by increased store traffic. It’s an extraordinary gain, and while Ross’s better execution at the store level played a big factor, it once again shows the compelling strength of the entire off-price channel. But do us a favor Ross: Get rid of that, “Dress for Less” signature. It’s so antiquated; it’s time for it to go.
