Technically, Chip Wilson is an ex-retailer, ever since he sold and then gave up control of the company he founded, Lululemon. It was a brilliant retail startup because Wilson not only created a terrific store concept but practically invented an entire merchandising concept that hadn’t even existed before: athleisure wear. But talk about seller’s remorse. Practically from the moment he cashed his last payout check he has been spouting a steady stream of trash talk about the new people running the company. He’s getting pretty ugly about them from time to time. Wilson has now launched a website that showcases the “quantum of change” needed at the retailer. He says “Lululemon has lost its way.” We’re thinking Wilson has lost his way. How do you get credit for supposedly knowing what you were doing when you sold out and then all you’re doing now is hurting the company that once meant so much to you. If you really had Lululemon’s best interests at heart you would just stop talking. Or maybe you’d be supportive of some of the things Lulu is doing. And hey, if that’s still not enough, go out and start up another brand that envisions Lululemon the way you think it should be today. But this behavior? Downward facing to be sure.
